Kilimanjaro Climbing 6 Days 5 Nights Machame Route

Machame route famous for its challenging hikes with outstanding views and high success rate, adventurers who only have six days to hike Mt. Kilimanjaro the Machame route is capable according to its acclimatization description. Compared to other six days trails, the Machame route drives adventurers to higher elevations fast (day three) which kick starts the body’s adaptation to altitude. However, this track requires if the hiker is in fit shape to be able to tackle the mountain challenging, elevation gains and losses.

The six day Machame variation is tough route. In particular, day four combined with day five makes firm schedule. Day four is a full day of hiking from Barranco to Barafu. Thereafter dinner and unfinished night’s sleep, the very long and strenuous summit day begins around midnight. The 6 day Machame route requires 19-24 hours of demanding walking, at extremely high elevation, with only 4-6 hours of sleep.

Day 0: Upon your arrival in Kilimanjaro International Airport you will be met by our airport representative, and transferred to a hotel in Arusha for pre-briefing and overnight stay before going to a life time adventure.

Detailed Itinerary

Machame Gate (5400ft) to Machame Camp (9400ft)


Distance: 11 km
Hiking Duration- 5-7hr
Habitat: montane Forest

You will be picked up from your hotel by then drive to the Machame Gate in MT. Kilimanjaro National Park. After paperwork and organizing the belongings you will leave the park gate behind, trek through the montane forest on a winding trail up a ridge. Lower down, very often the trail is muddy and slippery. Gaiters and trekking poles are a good idea here. You will continue leaning and enjoying fauna and flora till you entering Machame Camp for overstay.

Machame Camp (9400ft) to Shira Camp (12500ft)


Distance: 5 km
Hiking Duration- 4-6hr
Habitat: Moorland

You will set out after a breakfast, as you leave the glades of the rain forest behind, the path will be leading you on an ascending, by then crossing a valley along a steep rocky ridge, incrusted with heather until the ridge ends, by then the route turns west onto a river gorge and to arrive to camp for a siesta and dinner.
Overnight stay at the Shira Camp2500ft

Shira Camp 12500ft to Lava Tower - Barranco Camp 13000ft


Distance: 10 km
Hiking duration: 6-8hr
Habitat: Semi Desert

You will depart after breakfast towards the east up ridge and the junction to Kibo peak, thereafter the direction change to southeast towards the Lava Tower famous as "Shark's Tooth. By then the trek will take you to the second junction before entering the Arrow Glacier at an altitude of 16000ft before descent and to arrive at Barranco for Siesta, acclimatizing your body and enjoying the surrounding views and the valley bellow before you set out for a more high elevation.
Overnight stay at Baranco Camp: 13000ft.

Barranco Camp 13000ft to Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp: 15000ft

Hiking Duration: 8-10hr
Habitat: Alpine Desert

Trek is after breakfast, via a Baranco wall and a steep ridge to Karanga Valley. Then, the hike will leave the Karanga Valley behind towards the junction connects the Mweka Trail. Thereafter your walking boots will be stretching on the higher elevation and to arrive to the Barafu for overstay. At this point, you has completed the South Circuit, which gives summits views from different angles. You will have a relax and enjoy the nature, before served an early dinner, is our recommendation that climbers should go to sleep as early as possible, due to unfinished night sleep and summit attempts.
Overstay at Barafu Camp: 15000ft

Barafu Camp: 15000ft to Summit attempt: 19345ft to Mweka Camp: 10000ft


Distance: 5 km ascent / 12 km descent
Hiking Duration: 7-8 hours ascent / 4-6 hours descent
Habitat: Arctic

You will wake up for a cup of coffee, by then set out around 2am the trail will take you between the Rebman and Ratzel glaciers. Thereafter continue northwest before ascent through heavy scree to Stella Point on the crater rim. This is the most mentally and physically challenging part of the trek.

At Stella Point 18600ft, you will stop for a siesta rewarded with the most stunning sunrise. From this point you may encounter snow all the way on your 1-hour ascent to the summit. At Uhuru Peak, you have reached the roof of the continent of Africa. Faster hikers will have great chances to witness the sunrise from the summit.

From the summit, you descent to Mweka camp, via Barafu for hot lunch, thereafter you continue with your descent, gaiters and trekking poles are needed for the loose gravel while going down. As the evening set in you will be arriving at Mweka camp on 10000ft, the camp nestled on upper forest where often covered with fog, also rain can be expected in the late afternoon. Tonight is your last dinner on the mountain and a well-earned sleep.

Mweka Camp: 10000ft to Mweka Gate to Arusha: 5400ft


Distance: 10 km
Hiking Duration: 3-4hr of descent
Habitat: Rain Forest

After breakfast, you continue the descent down to the Mweka Park Gate to receive your summit certificates. In lower elevations, it can be wet and muddy. Gaiters and trekking poles will help your descending. Shorts and t-shirts will probably be plenty to wear (keep rain gear and warmer clothing handy).

After you pick up your summit certificates, you will drive back to your hotel in Arusha, before set out for a wildlife safari holiday or transferred to Kilimanjaro International Airport and fly out of the country or to Zanzibar.
